Cutting down forests is deforestation. It causes floods, droughts, soil erosion and the loss of wildlife.

Biodiversity is the variety of living things in an area. India has many species found nowhere else: they are endemic.

Wildlife sanctuaries, national parks and biosphere reserves protect plants and animals in their natural habitat.

Species that may soon disappear are endangered. The Red Data Book lists them. Extinct species, like the dinosaurs, are gone forever.

Some birds migrate thousands of kilometres each year to escape the cold. Project Tiger was started to save tigers.

Making paper needs many trees. Recycling and saving paper saves forests. Reforestation means planting trees again.
