Fibre to fabric: wool and silk · रेशों से वस्त्र तक: ऊन और रेशम

A free Chemistry lesson for Class 7 children.

Wool and silk are animal fibres.

Wool comes from the fleece of sheep, goats, yaks and camels.

Cutting the fleece off a sheep is called shearing.

The fleece is washed to remove grease and dirt. This is scouring.

The clean fibres are sorted, dyed and spun into yarn.

Silk comes from the cocoon of the silkworm, which feeds on mulberry leaves.

Taking the silk thread out of the cocoon is called reeling.

Rearing silkworms to get silk is called sericulture.
