Green plants make their own food. They are called autotrophs.
Leaves contain a green pigment called chlorophyll, which traps sunlight.
Roots take in water. Tiny pores called stomata take in carbon dioxide.
Using sunlight, the leaf turns carbon dioxide and water into food.
This process is photosynthesis. It gives out oxygen.
Animals cannot make food. They depend on plants and are called heterotrophs.
Fungi such as mushrooms feed on dead matter. They are saprotrophs.
