Forests: our lifeline · वन: हमारी जीवन रेखा
A free Biology lesson for Class 7 children.
A forest is home to many plants, animals and tiny living things.
The branches of tall trees form a roof over the forest called the canopy.
Shorter plants form layers below it called the understorey.
Plants make food. Animals eat plants or other animals. This makes a food chain.
Fungi and bacteria that rot dead plants and animals are called decomposers.
The dark rotted matter they leave, called humus, makes the soil fertile.
Forests give us oxygen, hold the soil, soak up rain and prevent floods.
