A mixture has two or more substances mixed together. We often need to separate them.
Big unwanted pieces, like stones in rice, are picked out by hand. This is handpicking.
Grain is separated from stalks by threshing, and from husk by winnowing in the wind.
Sieving separates small particles from big ones, like bran from flour.
Sand in water settles at the bottom. This is sedimentation. Pouring the clear water off is decantation.
Filtration uses filter paper to separate an insoluble solid from a liquid.
Evaporation separates a dissolved solid, like salt, from water by heating the water away.
