We pick out small stones from rice by hand. This is hand-picking.
A sieve separates big pieces from fine powder, like bran from flour.
A magnet pulls iron pins out of a mixture.
To filter muddy water, we pour it through filter paper in a funnel.
The mud left on the paper is the residue. The clear water is the filtrate.
Salt dissolves in water. We get it back by evaporating the water.
